For 15 years, I have taught bright, talented pupils, all bursting with potential- but who didn’t know how to work independently. Many couldn’t even tell me what their own strengths were. That realisation became the spark for the creation of The A.S.T.A.R. Method: a practical, flexible, and fully customisable framework that equips students with the study skills and 21st-century skills they need to thrive in school and beyond.

As an experienced teacher and former Head of Careers, I’ve seen first-hand how the right support can transform a child’s confidence, motivation, and ability to plan for their future. A.S.T.A.R. has been carefully designed to help schools deliver just that.

Most pupils don't just develop skills like independent study, organisation and prioritisation. They need to be taught deliberately and reinforced over time. We have found that the only way for these skills to properly embed is in three clear steps:

  1. Teach the skills explicitly – Study techniques, self-awareness, and 21st-century competencies.

  2. Apply them in context – Connect the skills to specific academic subjects, career exploration, and personal development.

  3. Review & support independence – Allow pupils to practise these skills, in their own time, but with continued, gentle support- from school and home.
